I generally have so many words. Probably too many words to share. As so many of you know, the hours and days right after the loss of someone who was incredibly important to you seem so foggy. So my words are disjointed tonight.
However, before I close my eyes and sleep without the what/when/how of the ending of Mitzi’s story hovering in the back of my brain as it usually does, all I can hear in my head is the song that was playing as she took her final 3 breaths this morning. We knew it was the very end of this roller coaster of emotions. It was just a short matter of time. The nurse and CNA left me and Gary with her because they knew. I had my softer, Christian music playing on my phone, with the songs on random. The Lauren Daiglesong I’ve been playing for Mitzi all summer came on. The lyrics are about God seeing us, no matter where we are. And He rescues us. Even if it means he has to send out an army to do so.
I love the way the message of this song speaks to my heart as a person. But when I heard it in the vein of what Alzheimer’s tried to do to my friend, it seemed so perfect. I know God sent out an army of friends and family and compassionate, caring people over the years to rescue Mitzi from the darkness this disease tried to inflict on her.
The fact that this song was playing over her final moments on this earth was such a confirmation to me that God never left her for a moment and that His ultimate mission to rescue her was successfully completed today. Having that knowledge tonight will make for the best sleep I’ve had in a long time…????
