A year and a half ago, I asked Mitzi what was one thing she really wanted to do. Without a moment’s hesitation, and out of everything she could have mentioned, she said she wanted to see her daughter graduate from high school.
There is never any real way to gauge how Alzheimer’s Disease will progress because it is so different for each person. There was a rough patch a few months ago that made me question what she would be like by the time graduation day rolled around. But she has been so, so much better lately. And she sat there today between her lifelong BFF and her family, waiting through the hundreds of names until she heard her daughter’s name get called. It was a monumental moment in her life, made especially possible by her tremendous strength, courage, and signature Mitzi brand of optimism.
I asked her on the way home what do we work towards now that she hit this goal…she smiled and said she would think about that after she makes it through the college departure!
One day at a time…
