I have often heard of some of the crazy Mitzi stories from her younger years (feel free to share them with me so I can read them to her and remind her of them). And we are known to quote many of the greats from Saturday Night Live sketches (especially from the early years).
Mitzi’s hilarious sense of humor helps keep things entertaining during our days together. She’s such a willing participant in any of my nutty brand of shenanigans. Like walking around Target in a unicorn head. Or the day of the solar eclipse when we couldn’t find any eclipse glasses that everyone was fighting over, so we made our own and she said they worked just fine. We were in Walgreens once picking up some meds and I jokingly suggested that, for her birthday, she dye her hair a fun color. She picked out purple because it matched our Alzheimer’s awareness bracelets (although we chickened out on actually buying it). She does, however, think her hair sprouts look trendy when she gets highlights put in by our Dream Team Beautician, Melissa. At a restaurant once, she picked up this coaster that said, “Driven by a love of beer and a passion for people.” She laughed and said, “Well, beer would make me sick, but I am actually driven by Ansley and I do have a passion for people.”
Mitzi’s pretty much up for anything and will often look at me and say, “I’m the weirdest friend you’ve ever had, right?” I always reply, “No way! I’m weirder!” Having a sense of humor and being willing to just be your crazy self is a MUST with Alzheimer’s…
