Yesterday we were able to sneak in a quick bite with one of Mitzi’s favorite friends…a sweet gal who used to take care of Mitzi and her husband’s 2 children. We had some very special peach Nehi soda in bottles we had procured just for her since they are her favorite and she was ecstatic! It surprised me, but it actually took Mitzi a short time for it to click who this woman was when she first came in. But once it did click, Mitzi held onto her hand and never let it go through the whole lunch!
I’ll be honest, every day when I get to her house, I wonder if today will be the day when it doesn’t register who I am. Even though she’s only known me for about 4 years, and I’ve only been her sidekick for 2.5 years, we’ve logged thousands and thousands of hours together. Mitzi and I have probably spent more hours together in conversation than my husband and I have in that time. So it will be hard when that day comes. But the thing about Alzheimer’s is that the heart doesn’t forget, even if the mind does. So I know that when, not if, that day comes, I won’t take it personally because I’ll remember for her and know she remembers in her heart…????
