We scratched Plan A, and then Plan B this morning. Because some days are just harder than others. Finally convinced Mitzi that having something to eat might help her feel better, so we darted into one of our favorite local salad spots. It was early so we’d miss some of the crowd. Seeing all of the people can be distracting because her eyes will play tricks on her and she’ll think she sees people she recognizes. Occasionally, she does. More often than not, it’s just the tricky eyes.
I like coming here because they are wonderful about cutting the salad up to make it easier for her. And it’s full of things she likes. Plus, it comes with apples in it, which I always ask for ahead of time. Sometimes I really think the emotional storms are partly from her not wanting to eat much anymore. But she will never turn down an apple slice.
She wanted to sit by the pretty purple flowers and the sunlight streaming in was an added bonus. They had a 70s music station playing in the background and she started singing along to Elton John’s Candle In The Wind. She knows I love Elton John and Billy Joel, so when one of my favs comes on, she will often tell me they are playing that song just for me.
Today, though, as we sat at the table in front of the purple flowers, singing our Candle In The Wind duet together, there was a moment of stark poignancy at the end of the song when we both realized how appropriate the final lyrics were…????????
