Today is a Doctor Day. The Neurologist. Mitzi goes into these appointments with a phenomenal spirit, but she really does not like them in the least and I am really starting to wonder what the point is of putting her through them. The truth is, there is very little in the way of remedy or treatment to offer a patient with Alzheimer’s disease. There are pills and more pills that can be prescribed to help manage some of the symptoms—all with negative side effects. Mitzi’s number one question is always, “What can I expect next?” She always wants to know what the next phase will be like for her. One of the foremost doctors in town at one of the world’s most highly acclaimed medical clinics, (that does groundbreaking work in every field of medicine) offered her this response in answer to her what-can-I-expect-next question: “More of the same,” he said, “just more of the same” as he was escorting us out the door. After we left his office, she jokingly told us, “I want a refund on that appointment, please!”
Some of the most fascinating research in terms of finding a cure for Alzheimer’s is being done by looking at the ways that glucose affects the brain. Some scientists are literally referring to Alzheimer’s as Type III diabetes. Dr. Dale Bredesen’s highly anticipated book, The End of Alzheimer’s, is a fascinating read and includes his lifestyle and diet-based approach to change the brain and even reverse Alzheimer’s. Could the way we eat be the simple key to changing the terrifying statistic that every 65 seconds in the US someone develops Alzheimer’s Disease??
