Beauty in the Broken

I wrote this 2 years ago today, but I remember it like it was yesterday because it was such a beautiful illustration of how Mitzi’s heart worked:

Nov 1, 2017

Mitzi and I took an hour walk on the beach today and enjoyed the amazing weather. Since Hurricane Irma, there have been piles of gorgeous shells all over the shoreline. I’d look around for the most perfect, totally intact, flawless shells I could find and I’d show them to her.

Mitzi, however, would find these obscure pieces of shell shards and show them to me…making sure she pointed out the ones that had the battered exterior but had a polished, stunning interior. Never once…like in 20+ shells that she picked up, did she pick up a perfect shell to show me. Every single one that impressed her was a broken one that was beautiful on the inside.

I marveled at the simple, yet poignant, lesson she taught me today in that hour on the beach. She passed by all of the perfect shells and was most enamored by the beauty on the inside of the broken. I’m pretty sure I got to witness some valuable wisdom as I watched the wonderful way her heart bypassed her mind and set the example for how we should, perhaps, all see each other…????
