Bringing Awareness, Hope & Encouragement To The Fight Against Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia

For Better Or For Worse

I don’t often write about Mitzi’s immediate family because I try to stick to my perspective with her on this journey. But, since her wish was to share her story to help shed light on what it’s really like living with Alzheimer’s, it seemed appropriate to mention a few of my observations on the “For better or for worse” front.

Mitzi’s husband retired early a year and a half ago and is her primary caregiver (which entails helping her with just about everything now). Plus, he does all the laundry, cooks the meals, pays the bills, handles the yard work, manages her meds and doctor appointments, and helps with the various needs of their two kids in college…just to name a few things.

A few months ago, they “celebrated” their 30th anniversary…ironically, Mitzi had some sort of neurological episode that day that resulted in a romantic 24 hour hospital admission; not exactly an overnight at the Ritz-Carlton, but it did include room service! Today, he celebrated his birthday at lunch with Mitzi and her sister before having to get her home in time for her nap.

Recently, I had the sweet opportunity to watch a friend’s daughter get engaged in an elaborate proposal event. As I recorded and witnessed this life-changing moment in the lives of the young couple, I couldn’t help but think how the vows they will take will carry a heavier and heavier weight as the years pass by. The commitment of marriage is not always an easy one. For all of the caregivers out there who are soldiering through Alzheimer’s or cancer or any other station of life requiring you to pour everything you’ve got into just getting your loved one and yourself through the routine of the day, I salute you and pray for your strength. ????
